Two airlifted to hospital following vehicle vs. buggy crash in Lafayette Co.

ELK GROVE, Wis. — Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a van hit a horse-drawn buggy from behind, sending the buggy and its occupants into a ditch.

Officials with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said they were first alerted to the crash around 4:30 p.m. An initial investigation revelated the buggy was traveling westbound in the 24000 block of State Highway 81 when the van hit the buggy from behind. The crash sent the buggy into the north ditch and caused all three occupants to get ejected from the buggy.

Authorities said one of the occupants was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Madison via UW Med Flight. Another occupant was airlifted via UW Med Flight from the scene of the crash. The third occupant was treated for injuries at the scene and then released.

The driver has been identified, but authorities have not said if he will face charges related to the crash. He was not injured in the crash.

The horse survived the crash and was returned to its owner, but the buggy was severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene. The van was also moderately damaged and was towed from the scene.

Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office were helped by Belmont emergency medical services, Southwest Health emergency medical services, Lafayette County Highway Department, and the Darlington Police Department.

The crash is still under investigation.
