Tree Falls On, Injures Man In Town Of Dunn

A 51-year-old McFarland man is listed in critical condition after a large tree fell on him while cutting trees in the Town of Dunn on Sunday.

Dane County sheriff’s deputies, Oregon police and EMS responded to a report of a man pinned under a tree at about 11 a.m. on Sunday. The man, James A. Hirsch, was found on Sand Hill Road, near Rutland-Dunn Town Line Road.

The Sheriff’s Office said Hirsch had obtained a permit to cut wood on state Department of Natural Resource property in the area. A resident had apparently heard Hirsch’s calls for help and called emergency first-responders.

When a sheriff’s deputy and Oregon officer arrived, they found Hirsch under a tree. He didn’t have a pulse and wasn’t breathing.

Neighbors helped lift the tree off the man and the officers performed chest compressions. A Med Flight helicopter responded to the area and he was transported to University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Hirsch’s pulse was eventually restored as he was being taken to the hospital, but he remains in critical condition.
