Town of Janesville woman given until April 1 to find homes for 23 horses

A Town of Janesville woman has until April 1 to find homes for more than 20 horses from her 15-acre property.

Deedee Golberg founded Spirit Horse Equine Rescue, where she works to rehabilitate horses with disabilities, in March 2008.

Golberg says in 2012, she spoke before the Town Board and was given the green light to continue to treat the horses, many of which are previously neglected, on her property. From that point on, she says it’s been difficult to keep down the number of horses she’s taking care of.

“The hardest thing I have to do is say no,” she said. “So many people contact us and want us to take their horses and we have to say no more than we can say yes.”

In November, Golberg says she got a phone call from the town saying there was an anonymous complaint about her horses. Then, she was given until April 1 to narrow down the number of horses on her property to 15.

“We thought we were OK. We didn’t willfully break any rules or anything like that. I would never do that,” she said.

Still, Golberg says to find new homes for the horses would prove to be incredibly difficult.

“Rescues across the country are full,” Golberg said. “The need far outstrips what we can do. It’s not like you can just call up and say ‘Hey, take some horses,’ especially with the population we have right now, which are pretty needy.”

Golberg says despite the conflict, she is trying to have a positive outlook. She says rather than finding a new home for the horses, she’s trying to find a new home for herself.

“I kind of look at this as maybe opening a pathway,” she said. “We’re going to be able somewhere to get our own facility, enough property where we can just move all the horses, and we could carry on somewhere else where we could have more room, do events, and just do more.”
