Thompson: $2M raised in 6 weeks

Republican Tommy Thompson said he raised more than $2 million over six weeks in his run for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

Thompson revealed his fundraising total to The Associated Press in an interview following a campaign stop Wednesday.  He and Baldwin must report their latest fundraising totals for the six-week period through the end of September on Monday.

Thompson said his campaign was broke following the Aug. 14 Republican primary but since then fundraising has been “exceptional.”

Even with the big numbers, Thompson said he doesn’t expect to have as much as Baldwin but he will be competitive with her in television advertising in the final four weeks of the campaign.

Baldwin’s spokesman John Kraus said he does not know when she will announce her total raised.
