Theresa E. Nygaard
MADISON- Theresa E. Nygaard, age 92, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012, in Stoughton. She was born in McFarland, on January 27, 1920, the daughter of Tollef and Gabriella (Skjaevland) Hanson. Both of Theresa’s parents were born in Norway and she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Theresa was a registered nurse and her husband, John Nygaard, and herself operated Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Madison. Theresa wrote the state policy for nursing homes for the state of Wisconsin and was invited to speak at the White House during the Clinton administration. She was a very caring person who was always helping those who needed her. She enjoyed being with her family and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Theresa and John loved going up north to go fishing, traveling to Las Vegas, dancing and spending time with their best friends, Don and Eleanor Schultz, and their family.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Kathryn) Nygaard, and Sheila Nygaard; grandchildren, Per (Andrea) Armstrong, John Tollef (Sandra) Armstrong, Chad (Michelle) Armstrong, Shawna (Todd) Franke, Ursula (Devlin) Murphy, Ingrid (Mark) Zitzer, and Jon Nygaard; great-grandchildren, Jake, Hannah, Odin, Jake, Megan, Thor, Gunnar, Inga, Rune, and Gabriella; and a sister, Lavon Hofland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; sisters, Mary Murphy, Myrtle Hanson, Lily Green, and Lois Douglas; brothers, Clarence Hanson, Sigurd Hanson, Lars Hanson, and Thomas Hanson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012, at MOUNT OLIVE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 110 N Whitney Way, with Pastor Jason Zobel presiding. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church.
