The M List 2016: Darcy Poquette

Darcy Poquette’s La Follette High School classrooms include an amazing variety of young people with one thing in common: They struggle in school. She teaches English as a second language–a program for which she serves as department chair at LaFollette–English language arts and AVID/TOPS, a college prep program for students who are underrepresented in college.

Many of Poquette’s students are English language learners, from a range of places worldwide, speaking a variety of languages. Her job is not only to teach English, but also to help students integrate into the school community. She does that through efforts such as a club for kids who’ve arrived in the country in the past three years, as well as the Asian Club. For her students, her door is always open and “there’s a good vibe in my classroom.”

Poquette adapts her class lessons so they click with her students. She says she enjoys learning from them. “I love the energy of the students. I love seeing them make significant progress.”

The M List

Madison Magazine’s M List is a who’s who of organizations and individuals who are having an impact on our local culture and economy. In its fourth year, the M List recognizes those making strides as mentors and teachers. Last year’s list of honorees were making impacts in the area of social innovation. The original M List, in 2013, honored the technology sector. The 2014 M List honored “Foodtastic” entrepreneurs and innovators.
