THE BACKSTORY: The Helbachs are a jet-setting family of six who have crisscrossed the globe. Together, they’ve traveled to Argentina, Chile, Russia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, France, Australia and elsewhere. But there’s one spot they love the most–Helbachs Coffee House on Madison’s west side, which is the shop they run as a family unit.

THE VIBE: The shop is a reflection of this family’s travels, from the design to the dishes. Stools depicting the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House and Big Ben are memories from trips. A reclaimed-wood feature wall was influenced from a trip to Amsterdam. And the teas, pastries, sandwiches and sauces were created from their internationally experienced palates. “The recipes have come from years of traveling and eating,” says Melissa Helbach, the matriarch of the clan.

THE MENU: Helbachs uses Just Coffee beans for its signature roast, a rotating light roast and specialty drinks, including cold brew. In addition to the pastries and breads from Madison Sourdough is a breakfast panini called the SEC–a nod to collegiate football’s Southeastern Conference–packed with egg, bacon, cheese and potatoes with a homemade chipotle sauce. Oh, and they also offer wine.

THE MUST-TRY: Quick to become a crowd favorite when Helbachs opened in May 2016 was the bourbon sticky bun–an ooey-gooey pastry that is still a top item at the coffee house.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The shop’s motto is “Helbachs Coffee House is an extension of the Helbach home.” That’s the truth, as you’ll find at least a couple of the smiling Helbachs at the shop at all times.
