Teen killed after car fell into quarry in Montello

Crash happened on Sunday morning

A 17-year-old Westfield girl died after her car plunged into a water-filled quarry in downtown Montello this weekend.

Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said that Tori Cywin was likely traveling at a high rate of speed and ran off the road, crashed her car through a group of trees and then into the granite quarry, which is located at the intersection Park and Doty Street. She was the only person in the car.

Investigators were notified after someone spotted tire tracks and broken tree limbs at around 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, but authorities said that they believe the crash happened hours earlier when it was dark.

It took dive crews and rescuers nearly 11 hours to pull the car out, which was in 80 feet of water,

Friends said that Cywin, a high school junior, was out and about at a graduation party on Saturday night. She was last heard from, shortly after midnight.

Sheriff Kim Gaffney said that they’re awaiting on toxicology results to see if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

“(We’re) just trying to figure this whole thing out, of what happened on this night,” he said. “In Marquette County on this night, we had two graduations. I’m not saying they’re related, but certainly the age group gives us some indication that what were these guys doing?”

The sheriff said that they’re hoping to quell a number of rumors that surfaced on Sunday that there were three people who were killed in the crash. He said that Cywin was the only person involved and at this point, they aren’t suspecting foul play.

Authorities said that this is Marquette County’s fourth fatal crash of the year.
