Teen facing different charge in shooting death of 11-year-old girl, Fitchburg police say

FITCHBURG, Wis. — Fitchburg police said Thursday the 15-year-old believed to be responsible for a deadly shooting that killed an 11-year-old girl is now facing a different charge.

The 15-year-old was arrested Tuesday night after police responded to a shooting in the 5100 block of Curry Court. Police said he was booked into the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center on a tentative charge of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon.

The teen was originally booked into the Dane County Jail on a tentative charge of first-degree reckless homicide.

Police said in an updated incident report that they’ve changed the tentative charge because of developments in the investigation and consultation with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.

Earlier on Thursday, the 11-year-old girl’s parents said the deadly incident was an accident. they’re focused on getting their son “the legal support he needs.”

Fitchburg police said they couldn’t share more about the incident because the investigation is ongoing.
