Sylvia J. Herling

MADISON-Sylvia J. Herling, age 90, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Oak Park Place. She was born on Feb. 4, 1922, in Lake Preston, S.D., the daughter of Roy and Mabel (Hagen) Rhoades. Sylvia graduated from Madison East High School in 1939, and was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Norman G. Rinden, in 1940. Norman preceded her in death in 1957. Sylvia later married Cecil C. Herling, who also preceded her in death in 1974. She enjoyed more than 40 years spent working in retail, at Yost’s and Bormann’s. Sylvia made many lifelong friendships during that time. She also liked annual trips to Florida, watching Badgers and Packers football, her game shows, and anything chocolate. Most importantly, Sylvia loved spending time with her two children, Marcia and Scott, and later enjoyed being a wonderful Nana to her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Sylvia is survived by her son, Scott (Jennifer) Rinden of Naples, Fla.; twin sister, Sara Quinn of Madison; son-in-law, Steve Rowin of Madison; five granddaughters, Lori (Matt) Mayer, Lisa (Mike) Hall, Mandy Rinden, Jennifer (James) Sharpe, and Stephanie (Justin) Check; six great-grandchildren, Iesha, Miah, Rayna, Chesney, Jackson, and Adriana; nieces; and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; sister, Katherine Olson; and just recently she lost her daughter, Marcia (Rinden) Rowin, who was also her best friend.

A Celebration of Sylvia’s Life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday. The family would like to thank Katie Brietzman of South Madison Coalition of the Elderly, Home Instead Senior Care, and many wonderful caregivers whose help allowed Sylvia to live in her own apartment until August 2012.
