CROSS PLAINS-Sylvester Statz, age 85, of Cross Plains, passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Heartland Country Village in Black Earth. He was born on Dec. 20, 1926, and raised in Cross Plains, the son of John and Rosina (Hollfelder) Statz. Sylvester married the former Donna Faye Roessler on May 8, 1951. He was a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker in the Cross Plains area for many years and later worked in construction for Findorff and Vogel Brothers. Sylvester was a veteran of World War II serving as PFC Army Casablanca from June 6, 1945 until Jan. 3, 1947. He was a member of American Legion Post 245. Sylvester enjoyed bowling, playing euchre, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends.
Sylvester is survived by his wife of 61 years, Donna Faye; their children, Tim (Susan) Statz, Cindy (Tom) Godar, Jeanne (Bruce) Schumann, Vivian (Chuck) Hayes, Faye (David) Zeman, and Joyce (Steve) Henning; grandchildren, Matt, Meagan, Brianne, Brian, Sam, Jenny, Jill, Ben, Libby, Hannah, and David; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Edwin, and McKenzie; sisters, Cathy Wright and Jeanette (Ray) Breunig; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Hambrecht, Collette McFarlane, Loretta (Pete) Dooley, and Colleta Statz. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jacob; and brothers, Edward Statz, Raphael Statz, and David “Muxy” Statz.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sylvester will be celebrated at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes Street, Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, with Father Tom Kelley presiding. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.
