Damaged vehicle spotted by officer
MADISON, Wis. — A suspected drunken driver smashed into a Madison Water Utility trailer and fled Monday night, according to a release from Madison police.
Police said the trailer was parked off the road in the 1800 block of South Stoughton Road when the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. After the crash, the vehicle sped away with significant damage, officers said.
Police spotted the damaged vehicle on East Buckeye Road with the front end of the vehicle dragging on the pavement and creating sparks. Officers said the driver, Anthony M. Copenhefer, 33, of Madison, ran a stop sign at Vondron Road before stopping for a squad car using its red lights and siren.
Copenhefer was arrested on suspicion of fourth-offense operating while intoxicated, hit-and-run, operating without insurance, operating while revoked and failure to stop at a stop sign.
