SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Sun Prairie police took a high school student into custody Thursday morning after the student allegedly posted messages on social media directed at a staff member alongside a photo of a gun.

According to the Sun Prairie Police Department, the student posted multiple photos on Snapchat, one of which included a statement directed at a staff member. A separate photo depicted a handgun.

Police said they have since recovered the gun shown in the post. It was found off school grounds, and authorities said they believe it was never at school.

Sun Prairie School District spokesperson Patti Lux said in a statement that the student is being interviewed in partnership with the Sun Prairie Police Department.

Lux said no students or staff were in danger.

District officials have not identified the student involved.

According to the statement, the school put a “secure hold” in place around 11:20 a.m. while authorities addressed the situation. Lux said the district uses secure holds when a situation doesn’t present immediate harm but “needs to be handled without movement in the building.”

The hold was lifted shortly before 12:15 p.m. and classes resumed as normal. Students’ lunch hour was adjusted so they didn’t miss it.
