Summit on freedom of information comes to Madison

Reporters and other supporters of First Amendment rights are gathering in Madison for a two-day conference.

The 2012 FOI Summit will focus on topics related to freedom of information, especially regarding open-records concerns.

The conference will be Friday and Saturday.

Program topics include a panel discussion on the trend of some state and federal agencies to resist calls for openness. Panelists will include executives of coalitions that fight for open and transparent government.

Other topics will include the likely long-range effect on campaign-finance transparency, following the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allows certain political groups to raise millions of dollars that are donated anonymously.

The keynote speaker will be Gene Policinski. He’s an executive at Vanderbilt University’s First Amendment Center and a former USA Today editor.
