Study says Beloit is the worst place to live in Wisconsin, leaders there say that’s not true
BELOIT, Wis. — The city of Beloit has been named as the worst city to live in in the state of Wisconsin, according to a study done by USA Today.
The study referenced rates of violent crime and poverty, as well as home values. According to the study, homes in Beloit are worth roughly half of the state average, the poverty rate is nearly double the state average, and there are significantly more violent crimes than average.
“Our first reaction was if Beloit is the worst city in Wisconsin to live in, then Wisconsin must be one of the best states in the entire world to live in,” said Celestino Ruffini, executive director of Visit Beloit.
Ruffini said while the city has its issues, it’s working hard to change its reputation.
“A lot of people know us as the old industrial town in southern Wisconsin,” he said. “But really, our story has turned on the backs of many businesses and community leaders.”
Ruffini said there have been several downtown developments, including a potential new baseball stadium and a casino possibly locating in the area.
“We will not be in that ranking for years to come,” he said. “We’re going to use this as an opportunity to recognize what we need to improve on and do that collectively among many partners.”
