Strawberry season starts early, ends early
Growers: About 1 week until berry crop depletes
WAUSAU, Wis. — Strawberry growers said there’s about a week left before this year’s crop of berries is depleted in central Wisconsin.
Berry farms began their picking seasons about a week early this year, starting in early June.
Unusual spring weather threw the berry season off kilter. Eighty-degree temperatures were followed by a freeze.
Jeannine Matushak, who co-owns Mike’s Berries and Engelberry Farm in Merrill, said a lot of people in the area come out to the fields during the Fourth of July holiday. But this year, the picking season will be over, or close to it.
The Wausau Daily Herald reported the holiday weekend is typically one of the busiest for the Matushaks.
