Steven D. (Steve) Verriden
MADISON-Steven D. “Steve” Verriden, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.
He was born on Oct. 29, 1952, in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Kenneth and Martha (Frankwick) Verriden.
At the age of 20, Steve had a diving accident, rendering him a quadriplegic. He graduated from UW Madison with a Journalism degree. Steve was deeply involved as an activist for the rights of the disabled, earning a reputation as a “rabble-rouser” due to his many protests and marches across the country. He worked with ADAPT, ACCESS and CLA.
Steve loved his family. He also loved riding his Harley Davidson, music and was great with kids, always willing to give the nieces and nephews wheel chair rides.
Steve is survived by his parents; siblings, Bill Verriden, Tom (Dawn) Verriden and Catherine “Cat” Verriden; extended family, Sandy Jacobs; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Patti Verriden; and brothers, Pat Verriden and Joe Verriden.
Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Private burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established with ADAPT in Steve’s name.
