Steve Komjathy

Steve Komjathy

Steve Fredrick Komjathy, 59, loving husband and devoted father, passed away June 20th, 2012 at University of Wisconsin Hospital after a valiant battle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Steve was born May 11, 1953 in Sun Prairie Wisconsin to Ruth Anna Lena Evers (Germany/Wisconsin) and Arpad Isthivan Komjathy (Hungary/Wisconsin).

The family moved to California where Steve attended Rancho Cordova High School and Sacramento Community College where he studied as a machinist for Air Frame and planes. He eventually became an accomplished machinist/mechanic. He worked for many years in the mining industry throughout the south west. He eventually returned to Wisconsin in 1999 to raise his children close to extended family. After two amicable separations from previous spouses Judith Fox and Melissa Carrell, devoted mother of his beloved sons, he married Laura Arendse on February 10, 2005, and the couple resided in Baraboo until Steve’s passing.

He had an adventurous spirit and zest for life that he was able to share with his children Stephen and Matthew as well as the rest of his friends and family. He loved riding three wheelers, jet skis, and motorcycles, a love both his boys had the opportunity to share with him. Steve passed on to his children the ability to fix anything. The boys spent many hours by his side working on their “toys”. He traveled extensively throughout the United States with his family as a child and continued to share the love of traveling with his boys. He was always looking for the next great adventure or mischief he could find.

He faced the challenge of beating Leukemia with a warrior’s heart and the loves of his life: Matthew, Stephen and Laura, at his side. Despite the long and arduous battle…they never lost hope.

The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at the UW Hospital that diligently cared for Steve throughout his treatment. In particular we would like to thank Dr. Ryan Mattison, Blythe Gage, Stacy RN, Mandy RN, and Mackenzie RN who were with us until the very end.

He is survived by his wife Laura, his sons Stephen Michael and Matthew David, their mother Melissa Hillestad, his sister who was also his best friend and stem cell donor, Ildiko F. Timmons, his mother and father-in-law Robert and Myrle Arendse, a sister Rozalia and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Komjathy, father Arpad Komjathy, sister Vera, and brother-in-law Mark Timmons.

A private celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 28th. In lieu of flowers, cards may be sent to Laura Komjathy or Stephen and Matthew Komjathy C/O Gunderson/Hamre Funeral Home, 157 S. Main Street Lodi, Wisconsin 53555.
