State Supreme Court to take on voter ID issue

After two previous refusals, the Wisconsin Supreme Court said it will hear arguments on two Wisconsin voter identification cases.

In state Supreme Court orders issued Wednesday, the court granted a petition for review in a case brought against Gov. Scott Walker by the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Education Network Inc., and another case from the Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP.

The Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP v. Scott Walker is pending in the court of appeals after two Madison judges had ruled the mandate impaired the right to vote.

The court said the two cases would be scheduled for oral arguments on the same date.

In September 2012 and January 2013, the Wisconsin Supreme Court had refused the state Justice Department’s request to hear appeal on the NAACP case directly and merge the cases.
