After nearly 50 years on State Street, The Pipefitter announced Tuesday that it will be closing.

In social media posts, the management says the past year has been difficult and they made the decision to close the doors.

The Pipefitter opened in 1972. Its known for novelty gifts, incense and smoke shop.

“We met three nostalgic generations of shoppers who became a part of the evolution of our industry,” the post says. “There’s really nowhere else like State Street. We sure will miss the eclectic characters and the progressive politics.”

While the Madison store is closing, The Pipefitter has two sister stores that remain open: flagship store Satori Imports in Oshkosh and Blue in West Allis.
