State shifted millions of dollars away from largest veterans’ home
MADISON, Wis. — An audit has found that the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs transferred millions of dollars away from the state’s largest veterans’ home despite growing concerns about conditions there.
The Legislative Audit Bureau’s report Friday says between 2003 and 2016, the Department of Veterans Affairs shifted $55 million from the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King to accounts that don’t directly benefit King.
The majority of the money went to another veterans’ home and a trust fund that helps provide services for veterans and their families. The Department of Veterans Affairs has come under scrutiny for allegedly providing inadequate care at King, which houses 670 veterans.
The audit also notes that the Department of Veterans Affairs has not created a plan for capital improvements at its veteran homes.
