Walker, Kleefisch win recall challenges

Control of the state Senate was up in the air late Tuesday evening with one last recall contest still undecided.

Democrats furious with Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s contentious plan to strip most public workers of nearly all their union rights forced the governor, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four GOP senators into recall elections Tuesday.

One of the senators quit ahead of Tuesday’s elections, leaving her seat open. Republican Jerry Petrowski won that seat and GOP Sens. Scott Fitzgerald and Terry Moulton easily defeated their challengers.

That left control of the chamber hanging on the race in the 23rd Senate District in Racine. With 22 percent of precincts reporting late Tuesday, GOP incumbent Van Wannggaard had 62 percent of the vote compared with Democrat John Lehman’s 38 percent.
