State receives $22.7M for pre-K programs
Award is 50 percent of Wisconsin's 2011 request
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin was awarded $22.7 million in a Race to the Top early-learning challenge grant.
The White House said Thursday that Wisconsin is one of five states awarded money this year under the $133 million grant fund designed to improve quality and expand early learning programs.
Nine other states won funding in the first round of awards last year.
For 2012 funding, Wisconsin and four other states were asked to amend their 2011 applications, reducing the plan to about 50 percent of the original cost.
The competition called on states to create proposals to improve early learning by coordinating existing programs, evaluating and rating program quality, and increasing access to high-quality programs.
Wisconsin’s money will be awarded over a four-year period in accordance with its plan.
The other five awardees received grants in the following denominations: Colorado, $29.9 million; Illinois, $34.8 million; New Mexico, $25 million; and Oregon, $20.5 million.
