State Patrol trooper killed in Fond du Lac shooting

Driver comes within feet of officers, faces 6th drunken driving charge

Authorities say a Wisconsin state trooper was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with a person who matched the description of a bank robbery suspect. Police said the suspect also was killed.

Fond du Lac police said late Tuesday that the incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. No details were available about the trooper or the suspect.

The city of Fond du Lac posted on its Fire and EMS Facebook page that the suspect was also shot and killed, and that the suspect was involved in an incident in Marinette County earlier Tuesday.

Flight for Life told WISC-TV3’s Milwaukee affiliate WDJT it was called to respond for three patients.

The area near Berger Parkway and Western Avenue has been shut down, and a bank robbery was reported prior to the shooting, WDJT reported. Police said a suspect robbed Hometown Bank on Peters Avenue around 4:30 p.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which will be leading the investigation, said it was a “large and comprehensive” process but that it was too early to provide more information.
