State Lawmakers discuss changes to food stamps
MADISON, Wis. — State lawmakers are discussing legislation that would change the food stamp program in Wisconsin.
Under a bill proposed last month, food stamp recipients would be required to include a photo of themselves on the card used to obtain food called the Quest card.
As the program stands right now, the Quest card only requires a name, and pin number.
Supporters are saying the measure will cut down on fraud, specifically regarding $32 million in fraudulent Foodshare payments since 2012. Critics of the bill think it won’t ultimately make a difference in fraud, but will limit qualified people in getting the food they need.
One member of the Hunger Task Force Matt Stienstra said he thinks the bill would highly affect the elderly and the disabled.
The bill was discussed in a hearing today.
