Stanley J. Gros

Stanley J Gros, 97, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.

He was born on January 4, 1917 in Detroit, Michigan to John and Mary. On July 1, 1944 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Carmelia in Chicago, Illinois and together they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year.

Stanley earned a law degree from DePaul University in Chicago and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar and the Wisconsin State Bar. Stanley was an attorney in private practice for many years in Chicago.

In the 1960’s he and Carmelia purchased and relocated to a farm between Westby and Viroqua in “Gods Country”. They joined St.Mary’s Catholic Church. He loved the farm and enjoyed talking about farming and all things related to agriculture. They raised registered Black Angus cattle.

In his younger years he was an avid swimmer and golfer, and in later years he continued his lifelong enjoyment of learning and reading. He was an inspiration and an encouragement to his children and grandchildren; admired, respected, and loved.

In addition to his wife, Carmelia, he is survived by his three children: Rosemary, Diana “Candy” (Dr. Bala), and Stanley, Jr. (Holly); three grandchildren: Dr. Subbu (Sarah), Valerie (Dr.Alan), and Raju; one great-granddaughter, Maria Josephine; and one sister,Helen. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry and Johnny; a son-in-law, “Roo”; and a brother-in-law, Leo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Viroqua. Fr. Michael Klos will celebrate the Mass. Friends are invited for visitation on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. with a Scripture Wake Service at 5:30 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Burial will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Chicago.
