Spring snow showers could affect your happiness

More snow showers are expected on Wednesday, the day that officially marks the beginning of the fifth week of spring.

“It puts a damper on your morale,” said Madison resident Mike Harris. “I’m just kind of confused. I don’t know if I should get the Christmas tree back up and go sledding.”

The late blast of snow is disappointing and could be affecting the moods of many.

“If you expect there to be good weather and you get slammed with bad weather, your expectations of happiness are dashed and then you are unhappy,” said Christine Whelan, a clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Human Ecology.

She said seeing spring flowers covered in snow and having to scrape ice off your windshield in the middle of April could affect your attitude.

“Had this been January, we wouldn’t be so upset. We would expect that the weather would be like this,” said Whelan.

She recommends Wisconsinites make the best of the long winter and try to keep their spirits lifted.

“We get to choose to be happy, and the thing is, we can’t control the weather. We can control how we choose to interact with the weather,” said Whelan.
