Middleton 8th-grader has Olympic biathlon dreams

MIDDLETON, Wis. - Eight-grade student Julia Torresani has been a biathlete since she was 4 years old. Her father, Mark, was always interested in the sport and created a course at Blackhawk Ski Club in Middleton.

Biathlon is considered one of the more complicated Olympic sports because you have to be skilled at both cross-country skiing and shooting.

Julia said it all depends on the day.

"Some days, skiing's really good and the snow's fast and not good for shooting and some days, are just better than others," she said.

Her father said the biggest challenge of the biathlon is all about timing.

"Somebody's taking 25 seconds per shot and somebody's taking 40 seconds per shot, there's a minute difference there if you're shooting 4 times at 15 seconds, so it's very, very hard to do all that at once," said Mark.

Madison native Joanne Reid is one of Team USA's biathletes. She'll be competing in the 15km individual event on Wednesday.
