Specialty prop shop offers extra goosebumps to the Madison community
MADISON, Wis. — For most people, Halloween ends at midnight on Nov. 1. For others, though, it’s a year-round affair.
Enter the Winslows.
Since 2006, husband and wife team BJ and Eileen have run Dapper Cadaver, a specialty prop shop with a knack for the weird.
This past year, the duo moved the store from its original front on Hollywood Blvd. in California to Madison’s west side. Eileen, a Milwaukee native, says the community has been welcoming, and the crew who have signed on to help bring the fantastic to life, even better.
“We really love the community here, we found some really great crew,” she said.
According to BJ, the shop has even been able to attract some employees from out of state.
If you’ve ever heard of the phrase ‘skeletons in the closet,’ well, they’re certainly no strangers to those.
“At one point, we had hundreds of tombstones in our garage,” Eileen said.
One thing is for certain, though: it’s never a boring day at work.
“Some days, you’re making 250 hands, but the next day you’re doing a dinosaur wedding,” BJ said.
The duo has also worked on some pretty high profile projects in the media world, providing a prop dummy for the most recent James Bond film as well as various other props for shows like American Horror Story, True Blood, and What We Do In The Shadows.
Beyond the frightening and the fantastic, Dapper Cadaver also works with first responders and medical institutions, providing them with training supplies like wounded dummies. For Eileen, it’s the best of both worlds.
“I feel very grateful to be able to both entertain people and also to help participate in saving people’s lives,” she said.
The shop offers its weird wonders for purchase or to rent, and they’re currently offering a discount to Madison residents with the code “MADISON20” on their website.
