A Theda Star helicopter responded Friday after a 31-year-old man was injured in a snowmobiling accident in Berlin.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a snowmobiler possibly broken through the ice upriver from Berlin around 11 p.m., according to a release form the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials searched for the missing man with a snowmobiler who had been traveling with him. Around 11:20 p.m., the missing snowmobiler called the sheriff’s office to tell them he had crashed his machine and provided GPS coordinates from his phone, according to the release.

Officials used a Theda Star helicopter to provide light overhead and assist with the search.

The crashed snowmobiler was found on a length of ditch from Fox River, known as the “town drain,” two miles west of the initial search area. The man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

Investigation shows that the two snowmobilers got lost because they were unfamiliar with the upper Fox River area. The snowmobiler crashed when he was following his friend, struck a fixed object and was ejected from his seat, officials said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to the release.
