Snow ‘major contributing factor’ in double fatal crash
Deputies: Snowy conditions contributed to crash
CENTER TOWNSHIP, Wis. — Two people were killed when their car slid into the path of a semi Wednesday night in Center Township, according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to State Highway 11 a half-mile west of North Roherty Road at 9:28 p.m. for a report of a car versus semi crash.
Investigators said a car driven by Jaime Paiz-Gutierrez, 41, of Footville, was traveling east on Highway 11. He lost control of the car on the snow and ice-covered roadway. The car crossed the center line and was struck on the passenger side by a westbound semi.
Paiz-Gutierrez and passenger Guadalupe Ortiz, 45, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies said both had been wearing seat belts and were trapped inside the car.
The semi driver, Jeffrey B. Smith, 46, of Rockford, Ill., was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Highway 11 was closed for approximately five hours.
Deputies said poor road condition were a major contributing factor in the case.
No citations were issued and no charges are anticipated.
