Small plane crashes in Wauwatosa, pilot critically injured
WAUWATOSA, Wis. — A small plane taking off from Timmerman Airport in Wauwatosa crashed in a nearby neighborhood Thursday afternoon, critically injuring the pilot, officials said.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. in the 4600 block of North 103rd Street. That area is just blocks from Timmerman Airport.
When officers got to the scene, they found the single-engine prop plane had crashed in a home’s backyard. The 18-year-old pilot — the only occupant in the plane at the time — was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Wauwatosa Police Chief James MacGillis said.
No other injuries have been reported, and no homes appear to have been damaged, he added.
North 103rd Street reopened just before 7:30 p.m., more than four hours after the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will investigate the incident.
MacGillis said there was some indication of distress prior to the crash.
