Sigurd J. Olson
Stoughton- Sigurd Olson, age 86, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Skaalen Nursing & Rehabilitation. He was born in Stoughton on March 27, 1928, the son of Sigurd and Hazel Olson. Sigurd graduated from Stoughton High School in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1946 at Ft. Sheridan, IL and served his country during WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. While stationed in Munich, Germany in 1960 he met Martha Peix and on April 17, 1961 they were married. Sigurd retired as a Staff Sergeant with an honorable discharge in 1967 after serving 21 years in the Army. He worked for the State of Wisconsin for 23 years for several corrections facilities until his retirement from Oakhill Corrections on April 1, 1990. Sigurd was an avid fan of the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. He was a life member of the Stoughton VFW Mother Post #328, American Legion Post 59, and Disabled American Veterans. In April 2012 Sigurd was an honored passenger of the Badger Honor Flight. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Martina (Allen) Wegner of Palmyra; three grandchildren, Warren Nelson of Denver, CO, Michelle (Ryan) Rustler of Sun Prairie and Steven (Melissa) Wegner of Waukesha; three great grandchildren, Nolan, Cameron and Reid Rustler; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sigurd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; brothers, Herbert, LaVerne (Donna) and Roger (Janice) Olson; and sisters, Lorraine (Alwood) Femrite and Patricia (John) Thorpe. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon, following the burial, at the Stoughton American Legion. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Stoughton American Legion or to Skaalen Nursing & Rehabilitation.
