In Madison, nothing says summer like the Dane County Farmers’ Market, Art Fair on The Square and Jazz In the Park. These events are a great way to get downtown and see the wonderful things our city has to offer. For the shoppers among us, however, there’s another Madison event that gets us grabbing our keys and heading toward State Street—and that’s Maxwell Street Days.
That magical time of year is upon us again, and this weekend more than seventy shops, bars and restaurants in the downtown area are participating in the famed sidewalk sale. While you wait for the sale to officially kick off this Friday at 8 a.m., we’ve called around to a few Maxwell must-stops to see what deals are waiting to be snapped up. For a full list of vendors, click here.
222 W. Gorham St.
Truly the most popular Maxwell stop, this boutique begins its sale a full day early to accommodate eager shoppers. Deals include further markdowns on sale items, but the main draw is the huge selection of slightly damaged items that get shipped from the shopbop warehouse for the event. This year promises a larger selection of shoes and handbags than ever before, but time is of the essence—while the store opens at 10 a.m. on Thursday, shoppers line up as early as 7!

Madison’s long-running body care shop promises deals on a cross section of everything, from soaps to candles to shampoos and body lotions. Most sale goods will be marked at half price or less, and the sale may be your last chance to stock up on products that have been discontinued. If you’re bringing kids on your Maxwell adventure, The Soap Opera is a great place to pick up a little something to reward good behavior.
230 State St.
This gift store pledges deals both inside and out, with discounts on everything from iPhone cases to cowgirl boot slippers. Shoppers can stock up on such go-to gifts as puzzles and fun coffee table books or indulge in a gift or two for themselves with a sale on Espe wallets and French dishware. If you need a break after hitting up these deals, Nick’s Restaurant just two doors down is also participating in the Maxwell festivities.
419 State St.
State Street’s bike shop begins shopping for its Maxwell inventory months in advance and boasts a collection of hard to find and unusual pieces sold at a great price. Bicycle enthusiasts can find deals on helmets, shorts, bike lights, tools and many other bike parts, many of them for less than half off. Stop by the store after your trip to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday; Yellow Jersey is closed on Sunday to give its employees a reprieve.
113 King St.
This fashion-forward men’s shop will have deals from previous seasons and possibly a steal or two from spring/summer 2012 to make room for fall merchandise. If there was a jacket you had your eye on a few months back or a shirt you considered for a Christmas gift, you just might find it at a great price. We were also told that the shop will be selling off the stock of women’s denim it had before it converted to an exclusively men’s store, sweetening the incentive to stop in.
