Shirley Mae McKy Garner, 87, of Richland Center died Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Schmitt Woodland Hills. Born at Boscobel on May 20, 1925, Shirley was the daughter of John and Mae (Kerrigan) McKy. Shirley graduated from Blue River High School in 1943 and The UW Platteville in 1964. She started her teaching career at The Kite School, Eagle Township and after 33 years of teaching retired from Richland Area Schools in 1991. Shirley married John Garner in 1945. They were the parents of two daughters, Susan and JoAnn, both living in Arizona. In retirement Shirley kept an active interest in education belonging to Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Wisconsin State Reading Association, The Richland Alumni Association, and Retired Educators. Shirley was always first to help others. She was an active volunteer at Schmitt Woodland Hills, The Thrift Shop, The Richland Hospital, and The Richland School District. Shirley had respect for all people, regardless of status or stature. She will be sorely missed.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, John Garner, daughters, Susan and JoAnn, other relatives, and many close friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Gale McKy, a sister Donna Adams, and sister –in-law Rosemary Radcliffe.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel with Pastor Bill Busch officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. A Delta Kappa Gamma service will be held at 9:30 AM. Private inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery, Richwood Township at a later date. Memorials may be directed to a charity of one’s choice. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service of Richland Center is assisting the family with their arrangements.
