Shirley Helen Nelson

Shirley Helen Nelson

Shirley Nelson, age 81 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin was called to heaven on September 1st, 2012 following complications from a surgery.

Shirley was born on August 15th, 1931 to D. Ward and Helen (O’Brien-Waite) Larkin. She graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in the spring of 1950. At her 10 year class reunion, she became reacquainted with her friend and classmate, Clarence “Junie” Nelson. They married on October 15th, 1960. At the age of 39 she gave birth to her 3rd daughter, Tena; and quickly learned that she was having twins and six minutes later gave birth to her second son, Tennie. Together she was blessed with 5 children and 3 grandchildren. At times she had a stern manner, but her family was the love of her life. Her husband Junie gave her many nicknames, but both of their favorites…were simply “Lark”.

Shirley had a career in nursing and later helped at the St. Vincent De Paul. In 1968 she was an active member in helping start a program known as Project Understanding, this program helped families from the south learn about families from the north. She was a strong supporter of her country’s military, but was a firm supporter of “no more war”. She often spoke of the first Wisconsin Dells resident to be lost at war, her uncle…Harold B. Larkin. She had strong political beliefs and was active in the fight to keep Perrier Bottled Water out of the area. She was active in her church and enjoyed golf, bowling, swimming and watching the Green Bay Packers.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Junie; her parents and her brothers, Robert and Harold Larkin. She is survived by her daughter Heidi Leeck (Mark) of Wisconsin Dells, daughter Genny Houston (Kevin) of Bridgewater, South Dakota; sons David and Tennie; and daughter Tena Preissel (Brad); a granddaughter Elizabeth Leeck and grandsons Noah and Jonah Preissel, all of Wisconsin Dells. A sister in law, Ann Baltz (Walter III) of West Salem, WI; Lillian Larkin (Robert) of Portsmouth, Virginia, Evelyn Larkin (Harold) of Baraboo, Wisconsin and other family and friends, her beloved cat Tigger and a special friend in her life for the past few years, Louie Kutzke.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with the Memorial Mass of Christian Burial service following at 6:00 PM at St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic Church in Briggsville, Wisconsin. Interment will be held at a later date at Spring Grove Cemetery, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank all their families and friends for their support and especially Patty Brunner and Louie Kutzke for all the love, care and companionship that they gave Shirley.
