Sheriffs call ads soliciting public donations ‘misleading’
Radio ads falsely claim to represent law enforcement
MADISON, Wis. — Area sheriffs clarified Tuesday that they are not affiliated with recent radio ads seeking donations for local law enforcement.
Sheriff Nate Dreckman in Lancaster, Wis., said the Grant County Sheriff’s Office is not associated with the group — which calls itself the National Constitutional Sheriff’s Association — nor are any other county sheriffs in Wisconsin associated with that group.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office also commented, stating the ads may have falsely given radio “listeners the impression that the local sheriff is asking for this support” Sheriff David Mahoney said, which is not true. He added that no local agencies will benefit from funds the National Constitutional Sheriff’s Association is seeking to collect.
The sheriff’s offices do participate in law enforcement group associations; however Dreckman and Mahoney said those groups do not solicit donations from citizens.
