Sheriff: 2 arrested following high-speed chase

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office said two people have been arrested after leading authorities on a high-speed chase in a stolen sport utility vehicle Sunday.

A Rock County sheriff’s deputy located a stolen SUV from Illinois at about 3:30 a.m. in the area of East Racine Street and Interstate 90 westbound in the city of Janesville.

Prior to the deputy initiating a traffic stop, the driver accelerated to a high rate of speed onto I-90/39 westbound, according to a Rock County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office pursued the SUV on I-90/39 westbound at speeds of up to 113 mph, according to the release.

Officers from the Edgerton Police Department were requested to deploy stop sticks on I-90/39 at state Highway 59, and the driver of the SUV struck the stop sticks, which deflated three tires. The SUV continued westbound on I-90 at a high rate of speed.

Rock County Sheriff’s Office deputies along with Edgerton police officers and Wisconsin State Patrol troopers continued to pursue the SUV into Dane County, where the driver exited I-90 westbound at mile marker 156 and continued west on U.S. Highway 51.

Sheriff’s officials said the SUV slowed to speeds of approximately 60 mph as it entered the city of Stoughton. The SUV struck a curb and came to a stop. The occupants fled on foot but were apprehended minutes later, according to the news release.

The driver, Nicholas C. Svoboda, 19, of Cary, Ill., was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle without consent, resisting arrest, knowingly fleeing an officer and a fugitive complaint, according to sheriff’s officials.

The passenger, Brittany T. Featherling, 20, of Chicago, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle without consent, resisting arrest and a fugitive complaint, sheriff’s officials said.

Svoboda and Featherling are in custody at the Rock County Jail pending an initial court appearance on Monday.
