Usually when something stinks at the ballpark it’s a metaphor for the play on the field and not the literal stench fans endured at Dodger Stadium Tuesday night.

The exhibition finale between the Dodgers and the Angeles was called off after sewage spilled on the field during the fifth inning.

The water main leak left a pool of brown liquid near the Dodgers’ dugout in foul territory, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Following a 32-minute delay, the game was cut short with two outs left in the bottom of the fifth and the Dodgers leading 4-3. Since the game was official when called, the Dodgers ended spring training with a victory.

Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said the issue stemmed from a pipe backup on two different levels of the stadium.

“We don’t know exactly where the backup was, or what caused it,” Kasten said after the game, according to the AP. “It had something to do with a main pipe here, as well as main pipe outside the stadium.”

The Dodgers are scheduled to be back at Dodger Stadium on Thursday to open the season against the San Francisco Giants, while the Angels will head to Oakland, which in the past has had its own issues with leaking sewage at the aging Coliseum.
