Republican U.S. Senate candidate Leah Vukmir wrote a letter supporting a fellow legislator after he was convicted of sexual assault three years ago.

Vukmir sent a character reference letter for then-Rep. Bill Kramer to a Waukesha County judge a month after Kramer was convicted of two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The letter focused on Kramer’s decision to quit drinking in 2014 but made no mention of the sexual assault.

Vukmir is a state senator. She’s running in a GOP primary against Delafield businessman Kevin Nicholson for the right to face incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

Vukmir campaign manager Jess Ward told the Journal Sentinel that letters like Vukmir’s help judges better understand defendants’ character and her letter doesn’t excuse Kramer’s criminal behavior.
