Select snowmobile trails may open this week, Dane County Parks says
MADISON, Wis. — Snow is on the forecast this week — which might mean good news for snowmobilers.
The Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs is monitoring trail conditions to decide when conditions are safe to open the Dane County Snowmobile Trails for the season. Because of the upcoming snow, select trails may open this week, according to a release.
“When trails open, snowmobile enthusiasts are eager to take their first ride of the season,” Mark Stephens, President of the Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs, said.
There are over 500 miles of snowmobile trails within Dane County. There must be at least six inches of snow and steady below freezing temperatures for trails to open, according to the release.
“It is important to wait until there are adequate snow conditions to open the trails,” Stephens said. “If some trails do open this week, we want to remind riders to use caution as there will likely be uneven terrain, snow cover icy sections and the potential for open water in the marshes and waterways.”
In order to ride on the snowmobile trails, a State Snowmobile Pass is required. For updates on the trails openings, visit the Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs.
