Scammers send child pornography then pretend to be MPD
MADISON, Wis. — Madison police say they’ve received multiple reports of a scammer spoofing their number to make it look like they’re calling from the department and asking for money.
The reports state victims received a picture of a young, nude woman from a random number, and then the get scam call soon after, claiming the victim is in possession of child pornography.
To avoid a fine or warrant, the victim is asked to pay a fine.
The Madison Police Department says they are investigating. Officials also remind the public that a detective will never ask for payment over the phone.
