Sauk Prairie officer resigns amid drug charges
Officer Matt Alt

The officer who is accused of stealing prescription drugs marked for disposal resigned from the police force Friday, according to a news release.

The Sauk Prairie Police Commission said in a news release Tuesday that Matt Alt voluntarily resigned from the Sauk Prairie Police Department. His resignation was effective last Friday.

Alt had been suspended with pay from his position with Sauk Prairie police since his arrest on Dec. 1 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and unlawful possession of a prescription drug.

Alt is accused of stealing expired or unwanted medication that was to be destroyed. Alt reportedly took pills from a Med Drop Box at the department and from area pharmacies and an assisted-living residence while in uniform.

Police seized hundreds of pills from Alt’s home during a search, a criminal complaint said.

Alt’s next court date is scheduled for Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Sauk County Courthouse in Baraboo.
