Married couple Sarah Puckett and Tim Kubichek rented an RV and stopped in Bayfield, Wisconsin, the summer of 2020.

Married couple Sarah Puckett and Tim Kubichek are no strangers to travel. Puckett has visited 78 countries and 48 states; Kubichek has checked off 76 countries and all 50 states. Kubichek assists Puckett with photo setups for her travel-focused Instagram account (@organized_adventurer), which is connected to her blog.

When the pandemic hit, their travel plans came to a halt. “In September and October of 2020, we were originally planning to do France and Italy,” Puckett says. “That didn’t happen.”

They stuck around Madison, where they both live, and spent weekends exploring local spots like Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo. When a family member’s wedding in Minnesota came up on the calendar, they decided it was time to test the waters and get back to traveling, but in the safest way possible.

So they rented an RV — the first time for both of them — and took a road trip. “That’s when we discovered, ‘OK, we can do this and be COVID-safe the entire time,’ ” says Kubichek.

And they could bring their cat, Mara, which was a plus.

They have backpacked before, and RV-ing felt kind of like that, they say. “We can just have everything we need right with us in one compact space and not have to unpack all the time,” says Puckett. They road-tripped to the wedding in Duluth, Minnesota, stopping in Bayfield, Wisconsin, along the way. They took a kayaking excursion through Lake Superior’s sea caves, hiked trails and stopped to enjoy a wildflower meadow. “We were just like, ‘This feels really comfortable,’ ” Puckett says. “Especially right now, we’re not super keen on being inside restaurants or in museums or any of those aspects of travel. We really have tried to keep to ourselves and stay outside as much as possible, and Bayfield was a good spot for that.”

After searching long and hard for the right type of RV, Kubichek finally found a great deal on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 170 in early 2021. They’re doing a full interior build-out with solar off-grid capabilities through Open Road Upfitters, based in Glenbeulah, Wisconsin. The couple is glad they rented, and now they’re charting plans to explore the United States on wheels (among several other upcoming trips). Both Epic Systems Corp. expats, they now work in consulting, and Kubichek’s next job will take them to northern Minnesota, the Dakotas and surrounding states this summer. Puckett will be able to work her fully remote job from their new RV (and check state No. 49, North Dakota, off her list).
