S. C. “Spike” Ehlers

S. C. “Spike” Ehlers, age 105, of Madison passed away on Saturday, July 07, 2012 at his home. He was born on December 31, 1906 in Rolla, North Dakota to his parents George and Emily Ehlers, later as a child his family moved to Iowa.

As a young man Spike moved to Madison in 1925 and worked in the printing industry starting with the Wisconsin State Journal and later cofounded the Gilman Press along with Robert Strauss from where he retired in 1964. On January 28, 1939 Spike was united in marriage to Lona Freitag in Iowa. He was a loyal member of the Rotary Club where he had fifty seven years of continuous attendance. Spike touched everyone around him by sharing his wisdom, humor, and life experiences. He enjoyed gardening, photography, and traveling. Spike was also a philosopher and musician; he played in a Jazz band in the 1920’s and continued to play the saxophone and clarinet during his life.

Spike is survived by his son David (Lucy) Ehlers of Las Vegas, NV, grandchildren Jeff (Judy) Ehlers of Dansville, MI, Karen Ehlers of Austin, TX, Bryan (Deborah) Ehlers of Boca Raton, FL, Scott Ehlers of Carrolton, TX, and Susan (Richard) DeYoung of Houston, TX, seven great-grandchildren, and close friends Kim and Brett Sprecher, Tanya Maam, and Jim Sirianni.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lona in 2000, a daughter-in-law Mary A. Ehlers, a grandson Steve Ehlers, and a great-granddaughter Nicole DeYoung.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI with Dr. William Rock officiating. Burial will be in the Swiss Church Cemetery in New Glarus.
