Ruth L. (Lukken) Melter
MADISON/PEORIA-Ruth L. (Lukken) Melter, age 96, passed away on Monday, June 2, 2014.
She was living in Peoria, Arizona, near her daughter, Sharon and her family. Ruth was born in Mt. Horeb on April 20, 1918. Ruth was an avid gardener as well as an excellent cook and baker. She was very well known for her delicious Christmas cookies and Peanut Brittle. Ruth also enjoyed golfing, reading, spending time with her family and playing cards with her husband, Bill and their friends. She was a long time member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Madison.
In 1984 Ruth and Bill retired to Ocala, Florida where they enjoyed gardening in the Florida sunshine. After 25 years in Ocala, failing health brought them back to Madison to be cared for by Ruth’s daughter, Carleen. After Bill’s death in April, 2009, Ruth relocated to Arizona in 2011.
Ruth is survived by three children, Richard (Sherry) Johnson of Naples, Florida, Sharon Bublitz of Sun City, Arizona, and Carleen Jorgensen of Madison; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Gladys Hoffman of Verona. She is also survived by many dear friends including Donna Elliot of Florida, Sarah Hutchinson of North Carolina, Barbara Brager of Wisconsin, and Vic Fenske of Phoenix, Arizona, who was Ruth’s Spiritual caregiver for the past two and a half years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill of 42 years; parents, Peter and Alena Lukken; and her sister, Dorothy Foss.
A Memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014, with the Rev. Bernt Tweit presiding. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorial gifts in Ruth’s memory may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2670 Milwaukee St., Madison, WI 53704 or Serenity HospiceCare.
A heart felt appreciation has been expressed to Ruth’s “family” at “Care 4 U Group Homes, LLC” located at 9334 W. Brown Street in Peoria, Arizona. Included are owners Kristine and business partner Charles, caregivers Becky and Brandie, known to Ruth as ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Moonshine’, and Cyndi who was a nighttime caregiver. Eddie and Tim were also night-time caregivers. Jackie and Vidi gave Ruth refreshing baths each week. Russel and Francie were Ruth’s hospice nurses who took care of Ruth’s medical needs.
