Russell H. Nelson died October 1, 2012 at the Pines Assisted Living in Prairie du Sac, WI. Russ was born May 30, 1917 in Deer River, Minnesota to William T. and Lillian E. (Anderson) Nelson . He lived in Swan River, MN, where his sister, Beatrice A. was born in 1919, then they moved to Kelly Lake, MN, and at age or 3 or 4 they moved to Keewatin, Minnesota.

Russ graduated from R. L. Downing High School in Keewatin in 1935 and attended Hibbing Junior College in the fall of 1935 to spring 1937. He enrolled at Dodges Technical Institute in Valparaiso, Indiana in the fall of 1937 to the spring of 1939. He attained a Federal Second Class Telegraph license while at this school and planned on working on a ship on the Great Lakes but there was little work that year. Russ worked for M.A. Hanna mining company in Keewatin in 1940. Before he was married he also worked for the Bennett Mining Co. on the track gang down in the pit repairing the tracks. He married Margaret E. Tabaka of Nashwauk, Minnesota on November 21, 1940. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a telegrapher on April 6, 1941. Later he was employed by the Seaboard Airline Railroad in North Carolina on December 7, 1941 as a telegrapher. Russ returned to the Great Northern RR in the spring of 1942 as a telegrapher. Russ served in the U.S. Navy from April 1945 to April 1946 spending much of his time going to school to be a radar operator. He became a train dispatcher in Kelly Lake, Minnesota on August 13, 1950.

He became member of the Catholic Church on June 26, 1951. Russ and his family lived in Pengilly, MN from April 1946 to June 1965. They moved to Superior, WI in June 1965 to work as an Assistant Chief Train Dispatcher. Russ retired from the BNSF RR June 1, 1979.

He is survived by three children, David (Kathleen) Nelson, of New Bern, NC, Charles (Patti) Nelson, of Stuart, FL and Ruth (Dave) Lohr , of Prairie du Sac; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends at the Pines Assisted Living in Prairie du Sac.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:30am at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held the morning of the service from 10:00am until 11:15 am at the Hooverson Funeral Home, Sauk City.
