Rosemary Edwards

Rosemary Edwards

Rosemary Edwards, age 94, of Dodgeville, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 23, 2022, at Upland Hills Health following a stroke. She was born December 23, 1927 on the family farm in Darlington, Wisconsin to Fred and Elsie Hirsbrunner. She was the tenth of 12 children which included five boys and seven girls.

Rosemary graduated from Darlington High School in 1945 and attended Platteville Teachers College for two years, earning her teacher’s certificate. She began her teaching career in one-room school houses in Lafayette County. She met Bob Edwards of Belmont, Wisconsin at a dance in Platteville and the couple married June 1, 1948 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington. The couple initially farmed, then operated restaurants in Belmont and Dodgeville before Bob purchased and operated his own bulk milk truck. During this time, Rosemary worked as a waitress and grocery store cashier before deciding to return to college to earn her four-year degree. She then resumed her career in education, teaching second grade at Ridgeway Elementary School and Dodgeville Elementary School, retiring in 1990 after a career of 28 years.

Rosemary and Bob had four sons. It is a testament to Rosemary’s fortitude that she was able to raise four rambunctious boys while simultaneously working and attending college. In 1986, Bob was diagnosed with kidney disease requiring dialysis treatments three times each week. To save Bob the time and inconvenience of driving to Madison, Rosemary learned to operate the highly technical hemodialysis machine and Bob’s life-saving treatments were conducted in the family living room until Bob passed away from heart failure on April 5, 1991.

In retirement, Rosemary worked part-time at Lands’ End, traveled, including three trips to Switzerland, played her accordion, and was very active in women’s groups at the Dodgeville United Methodist Church. Rosemary had five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who she adored and who likewise adored her. She would light up at any opportunity to spend time with family.

Rosemary is survived by her children, Ed (Jean) Edwards, Terry (Penny) Edwards, and Doug (Karen) Edwards; her grandchildren, Brian (Jenny) Edwards, Nathan (Cassie) Edwards, Matthew Edwards, Alison (Jacob) Noyes, and Ashley Edwards, her great-grandchildren, Isaac Edwards, Victoria Noyes, Emma Edwards, Max Edwards, Amelia Noyes, and Joanna Edwards; her sisters, Marian Swenson and Shirley Von Glahn. Rosemary was also preceded in death by her son, Curtis, on November 28, 2021, and siblings Robert Hirsbrunner, Viola Steger, Ruth Ruf, Arthur Hirsbrunner, Paul Hirsbrunner, Wanda Jacobson, Fritz Hirsbrunner, Lois Gierens and Edwin Hirsbrunner.
