Ronald McDonald House kicks off expansion
MADISON, Wis. — A local nonprofit is trying to expand its facilities to provide more families with a home away from home.
The Ronald McDonald House in Madison is adding more rooms and community spaces to house families who have children staying at the American Family Children’s Hospital.
The building has 18 rooms and has given more than 28,000 families a place to stay over the last 25 years.
Organizers say they have spent the last year and a half raising money for the addition, and kicked off the process Saturday with a groundbreaking.
“We were putting families in hotels constantly, having to turn families away, the hospitals have grown and our mission is to house these families here at the Ronald McDonald House. the board knew something had to be done. Staff knew something had to be done,” Executive Director Kevin Huddleston said.
Huddleston also called the renovation a “dream come true.”
Any family traveling at least 35 miles for their child to receive care can stay at the Ronald McDonald House for free.
