Rodney J. Helmke
MADISON- Rodney “Rod” James Helmke, age 87, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at Capitol Lakes Health Center in Madison.
He was born on May 26, 1929, and attended Madison East High School. He attended UW Madison, graduating in 1951, with a degree in business. Rod served in the U.S. Army in Korea as a 2nd Lieutenant, before returning in 1954 to marry the love of his life, Lorraine Weger. He and Lorraine remained lovingly united for 62 years.
Rod and his family spent many of his working years in Edina, MN. Rod and Lorraine then moved back “home” to Madison in 1985, to complete his career and to be closer to his family.
In his younger years, Rod was a passionate aviator and fondly remembered working on airplanes at Morey Field. He was also very active at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina, MN. and at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Monona.
Rod is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his children, Randy Helmke of Madison, Lynn Helmke of Racine, and Mark (Sherri) Helmke of Waunakee; as well as five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is further survived by his sisters, Patricia Johnson and Judith (Keith) Brockmiller; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Rod was preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law, Walter Hermanns.
Funeral services will be held at ST. STEPHENS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m., until the time of the service on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to St. Stephens Foundation at St. Stephens Lutheran Church.
